Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

After this course, the student will be able to characterize the basics of cognitive models, and explain their utility. In addition, the student will be able to develop, implement and evaluate such models.


Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The course offers a review of standard cognitive models that provide insights into the mechanisms behind natural and cognitive phenomena, with a focus on how to model these in simulations and robots. The course is organized around three main topics:

I. Cognitive agents and robots

  • Agent models
  • Models of reactive behavior
  • Learning models
  • Cognitive robots

II. Modelling language development

  • Models of language learning
  • Models of language evolution
  • Models of child language acquisition

III. Social Robotics

  • Socially assistive robots
  • Human-Robot Interactions

 Based on these themes, students will obtain an intuitive understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of cognitive models. Lectures will be alternated with seminars in which students gain hands-on experience with the simulation platform Scratch, as well as programming the Aisoy1 robots. (More advanced programmers may use Python.)

In addition, students will work on a project in which they develop a cognitive model and implement this on the Aisoy1 robots. At the end of this project, the result will be demonstrated to the class during one of the lectures.


Bijzonderheden (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

Examination occurs through in-class tests (20%), a group project (30%) and a written exam (50%). In addition, there are a few individual assignments that need to be passed in order to pass the course.
