Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The general objective of this course is to review a number of mathematical concepts introduced in high school algebra and to introduce new mathematical concepts and solutions that are relevant for the study of social sciences and Artificial Intelligence. The course takes a practical, applied approach to math in order to increase student appreciation of the material. Real world cases include examples from Ad Spending, Ad-Blocking, Facebook use, smartphone dependency, terrorism, environmental changes and financial decisions, e.g., student loans.

After completing the course, students are able to tackle real life finite math problems by using mathematical models based on company data.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand principal formulas and terms pertaining to the use of straight lines and linear formulas.
  2. Have basic knowledge of how to solve linear equations and how to use, compare and construct matrices.
  3. Understand and apply various laws for sets.
  4. Have the ability to compute probabilities of the occurrence of certain events.
  5. Draw conclusions and make forecasts using various mathematical tools for inductive statistics.

The material covered in the course will include the following topics:

  • Straight lines and linear functions
  • Systems of linear equations and matrices
  • Sets and counting
  • Probability
  • Probability distribution and statistics

The course is centered around the textbook Finite Mathematics for the Managerial, Life, and Social Sciences by S.T. Tan (both edition 11 and 12 can be used).
