Doel van de cursus

The general objective of the course is to help students master the basic concepts and techniques of linear algebra that they will need in other courses focusing on programming and data science. The course is introductory and intended for students with a variety of backgrounds. It balances theory and applications and in its didactic approach, it combines a traditional form of presentation with student-centered learning. The material is presented algebraically, geometrically, numerically, as well as verbally, thus supporting various kinds of learning styles.

The course contains a limited number of theorems and is light on proofs; however, it offers a comprehensive introduction into the subject and its applications.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand vector concepts such as dot product, length, orthogonality, and projection.
  2. Have basic knowledge of the systems of linear equations and solutions to them.
  3. Have knowledge of the basic facts about matrices, matrix operations and their properties.
  4. Explore the notion of an eigenvector and the essentials of determinants.
  5. Generalize concepts related to orthogonality and understand the basic results about orthogonal and orthonormal sets of vectors.

The material covered in the course will include the following topics:

- Vectors

- Linear equations and systems

- Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors; Determinants

- Orthogonality

 

The course is centered around the textbook Linear Algebra: A modern introduction by D. Poole (both edition 4 and 3 can be used).
