A "game" is an environment which is safe to experiment in. Games are often used for entertainment, but also for serious purposes, such as simulation, training, education, testing, and social interaction. In artificial intelligence research, games are often used as testbeds and benchmarks for particular forms of intelligence. In human-human or human-robot interaction, games are often used to set up situations that elicite particular behaviors. From these perspectives, the goal of the course is to teach students how to set up and use games for research in cognitive science and artificial intelligence. The students will learn:
  • Designing games for particular research goals
  • Designing games for particular objectives
  • Assessing games for effectiveness
  • Designing and building artificial intelligence for game playing
  • Evaluating artificial intelligence using games

Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The course will consist of both lectures and assignments. The lectures will provide a theoretical framework. The assignments ask students to build games and/or artificial intelligence for games. The games are not necessarily computer games, any form of game or simulation is, in principle, part of the course. The course will be mostly focused on the assignments, some of which will be done in teams, while others will be done by individual students. There will be at least 2 assignments, but likely there will be 3 or 4. This will be discussed at the start of the course.

50% of the final grade of the students will be the written exam. The other 50% will be based on the grades for the assignments.
