After the course, participants will be able to:
  • read and analyse a selection of Classic CIW articles
  • use formal and academic words and constructions in English
  • write well-structured sentences, paragraphs and papers
  • formulate solid academic arguments related to their course of studies
  • use the appropriate academic writing style
  • apply the English grammar, spelling and punctuation rules correctly

Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

During this course participants will explore a number of important research articles in the field of Communication and Information Sciences. In each lecture, a particular (aspect of an) article will be analyzed and discussed, on the basis of its contents, structure or argumentation. In addition, participants will be trained in reading, writing and speaking in an English academic environment. Attention will be paid to (academic) style, grammar, argumentation, structure and common error correction. During the course, participants are required to do several (writing) assignments and give a presentation in English.

This course will be taught partly by PhD students and partly by an English lecturer.

This course is the starting point of the Blended Learning project (http://vaardighedenfgw.uvt.nl/) for English language skills. In this course, students will improve their academic English writing and speaking skills and will learn to evaluate each other's work. Blended Learning courses in the second and third year will make use of and refer back to the skills acquired during this course.

Participants' final grades will be calculated as follows: Classics Exam 25%, Language Exam 25%, Paper 25%, Presentation 25%. Grades will be averaged, but participants should obtain at least a 5.0 on the individual components. Components should be handed in individually.

80% attendance is required for this course. Group enrollment opens 1 week prior to the first lecture (via Blackboard). Please enroll on Blackboard and follow the announcements.
