The student is able to identify exogenous and endogenous characteristics in a movie.
Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)
The student knows and understands methods to measure the behaviour of participants watching movies.
The student knows and understands methods to analyze endogenous movie characteristics.
The student knows and understands methods to measure and quantify exogeneous movie characteristics.
The student understands and is able to apply cognitive theories about vision and story comprehension.
The course brings together two related disciplines in communication research: how the brain understands stories and how it understands vision. It is about the cognitive and perceptual characteristics of watching and experiencing visual stories, movies. What sets this approach apart from other ways of understanding movies is its reliance on neuropsychological models and empirical research. The viewer\'s experience and the brain\'s performance are analyzed through objective, systematic, and replicable measurements.
Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)
Understanding movies requires the viewer to, continuously, pay (visual) attention to those parts of screen that contribute to a meaningful interpretation of the actions and the story as the movie evolves. Since attention is driven by features of the story (events, characters, emotions) as well as by characteristics of the visual information (color, shape, movement), a theory or model of movie comprehension should take both into account.
The course is assessed in three individual assignments, one group assignment, and a written exam. The assignments will account for 40%, and the written exam for 60% of the final mark. The written exam should be passed with a pass mark.
