Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

Language comprehension is at the core of communication. By using language, knowledge is conveyed from one individual to the next, whether it is through a book, a newspaper, an e-mail, a tweet, a text message, a commercial, a blog, a vlog, a dialogue, a lecture. The knowledge of the speaker/writer is coded into language and is decoded again by the listener/reader. How does this work? What does language consist of? How is language processed in the brain? How is knowledge stored? These questions are answered in the course Cognition and Process from a linguistic and a psycholinguistic point of view. Notions like coherence, implication, presupposition, inference, reference are explained, discussed, and exemplified and the student will come to a deeper understanding of the role of language in human interaction.

Bijzonderheden (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

Students will receive theoretical and practical assignments that will account for 20% of the final grade. To give an example of such an assigment, students could be asked to study language phenomena in real life, for instance, "Take a chapter of a novel and count the occurrences of X. Do the same for a chapter in a text book. Give an example of a find in each work. Compare and (try to) explain the numbers."

The written exam covers the materials provided by the literature and the lectures and accounts for 80% of the final grade.

Labor Market
The course will deepen the student's language understanding which will improve their communication skills in a professional environment.
