Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

(A) Students will learn the important issues and concepts regarding cultural diversity in organizations and in the labour market and learn how to problematize these issues and concepts using various disciplinary approaches; 


(B) Students will learn and critically assess the various management approaches to deal with the challenges (for organizational performance and equal access to resources) produced by cultural diversity in these settings;

(A) Students will learn the important issues and concepts regarding cultural diversity in organizations and in the labour market and learn how to problematize these issues and concepts using various disciplinary approaches; 


(B) Students will learn and critically assess the various management approaches to deal with the challenges (for organizational performance and equal access to resources) produced by cultural diversity in these settings;


(C) Students will learn to link up these concepts and approaches to cultural diversity in work settings and its management with data on cultural diversity issues and its management in a particular organization, to evaluate this management in the light of these issues using the literature and to develop a new synthesis of management approaches to this organization.

Additional skills: team planning, text analysis, conducting interviews, writing, critical thinking.


Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The course focuses on:

(A) cultural diversity in work settings in organisations, including both companies and non-profit organizations: the dynamics of a culturally diverse workforce and interactions with a culturally diverse environment as well as the impact of cultural diversity for both the organisations themselves and indivdual employee's interests;

(B) cultural diversity in the labour market: organizations' recruitment efforts, employees efforts to look for a job, obstacles encountered and (in)equality produced in these efforts and outcomes;

(C) conceptual approaches and outcomes of various policy alternatives in terms of affirmative action, equal opportunity measures and diversity management.

Special attention will be given to internationally operating organizations.


Bijzonderheden (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The main body of the course consists of lectures and discussions on the above mentioned subjects. Already at the beginning students will be instructed in the team assignment that will focus on a small research assigment in a particular organization. In the beginning of December students as a team need to have access to an organization. One working group meeting will be dedicated to getting feedback on team progress so far in developing the team paper. It will be carried out in December and beginning of January.

Assignments: individual written exam (50%, minimum grade 5.5) and team paper based on the reserach assignment (50%, minimum grade 5.5).

Labour market oprientation: students carry out a research and consultancy project as a team in an organization.
