Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

After taking this course, the students will be able to

  • describe, characterize, apply and compare probabilistic and structural frameworks for representing language;
  • characterize and discuss the relationship between the language representation frameworks and the cognitive processes involved in various aspects of language acquisition (such as lexical acquisition or grounding);
  • compare strengths and weaknesses of different learning settings (such as identification in the limit or PAC learning) and argue their impact on the learnability of families of languages.

Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

We will discuss language learning from different perspectives. In one part of the course, we will focus on the cognitive processes involved in human language acquisition, including the association of words to meanings, learning language structure, and formation of linguistic categories.

In the other part of the course, we will look at formal and empirical approaches to language learning. Based on formal representations of language, we will identify families of languages that are efficiently learnable within various learning settings. Additionally, applications (based on empirical approaches) will be described that allow learning of natural languages, but also other modalities, such as music.

Bijzonderheden (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The final grade of the course will be determined by the weighted average of the grades of the written exam (60%) and two assignments (20% each).
