Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

Non-verbal behaviors form part of interpersonal communications and provide a window into people’s motivations and emotions. The measurement and analysis of non-verbal behavior is therefore of interest to researchers, but also has commercial applications. For instance, facial movements are now automatically tracked in video feeds to analyze people's attitude to new advertisements; biomechanical sensors are now woven into t-shirts to track consumer behavior; and electrophysiological sensors worn in a wristband are used to assess the effectiveness of computer games.

In this course, students learn the basics of different techniques that can be used to measure and analyze non-verbal behaviors. Topics that will be covered involve the assessment of facial, gesture, and postural behaviors by means different techniques. The techniques that we will cover include manual coding, using camera technology for automatic coding, biomechanical, and electrophysiological measures. Questions that may arise are: What features of an arm gesture can be used to distinguish between different motivational states? Are there advantages of biomechanical over electrophysiological measures? And, what are the trade-offs between manual and automated analysis tools?

At the end of this course the students will have sufficient experience with different non-verbal analysis techniques such that they can start to apply these in their own research projects.
