Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

In this course, you will gain insight into several methods and techniques of video analysis. After finishing this course, you have learned how to encode and analyse video recordings, based on a self formulated research question.

Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

Video recordings can be analysed in several ways, depending on your research question and available materials. What exactly do you want to investigate? What is the best way to investigate it? Do you use existing materials or do you decide to make recordings yourself? What instruments of measurement are available? How do you encode, analyse and report in a proper and reliable manner?

In this course, a selection of the most important methods and techniques of video analysis will be discussed by examples and acquired results from various areas of research. Traditional methods, such as coding by hand, will be discussed. Furthermore, more modern automated ‘social signal processing’ techniques will be covered. Besides the encoding of spoken language, the analysis of nonverbal behavior (such as body language and facial expressions) will also be addressed.

Based on compulsory homework group- assignments, a paper has to be turned in at the end of the course.
